Samurai Safety

What can the way of the samurai teach us about safety?

“It is a fact that fish will not live where the water is too clear. But if there is duckweed or something, the fish will hide under its shadow and thrive. Thus, the lower classes will live in tranquility if certain matters are a bit overlooked or left unheard.” -Hagakure: The Book of the Samurai

Is it the job of the safety professional to be a safety cop and sterilize the work place of any and all procedure or safety “violations?” No, that approach is damaging and ineffective. Teaching employees correct principles, overlooking minutia, focusing energies on improving the system and then letting them govern themselves will yield MUCH better results.
